If you’re running a business you will almost certainly need a website if you are serious about marketing in what has become one of the most important places to advertise. To have a website, you will also need web hosting. A web hosting company basically provides servers that ‘host’ websites.

A web hosting companies servers are connected to the Internet 24 hours a day with super fast connections to ensure the website that are hosted on the servers are accessible at anytime and to ensure they provide information as quickly as possible when a website is requested by a user.

So how do you best find affordable web hosting? One of the easiest places is of course to look on the Internet. All web hosting companies will have websites which advertise their products and services so that you can compare them and make an informed choice.

It’s also important to consider what guarantees the hosting company provide to their customers. Some provide an ‘Uptime Guarantee’ which will guarantee that your website will be available to a certain percentage of time (usually about 99%) or else you will receive some form of compensation (usually equivalent to a months web hosting fee or similar). Some companies also call this a ‘Service Level Guarantee’ which documents the minimum levels of service you should expect and details what will happen should those levels not be met.

When looking for affordable web hosting you may also want to consider the type of server that will host your website. The most popular types of server are Linux or Windows servers. Both these servers can behave differently and depending on who has built your website, they may wish to specify which they prefer. For this reason its worth choosing affordable web hosting in conjunction with your website designer/developer.

When choosing web hosting be sure to also look into the bandwidth they make available to you. Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred when visitors come to your website. It includes both pages and images on the pages so its important to ensure you have plenty. If you website is new you might only need a couple of Gigabytes (Gb) per month to start you off but as your traffic grows you may quickly find yourself in double figures. If you website will be hosting audio or video files you will find you need a great deal more bandwidth.

Take your time and choose carefully. Making a quick decision may land you with the wrong company. Your website will be an extremely important part of your business and a slow or unavailable website will give a very wrong image to your potential customers.
